Aquakultre is the artistic voice of Lance Sampson — an uncommonly versatile singer, rapper, filmmaker and storyteller from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Lance’s third full-length Aquakultre release, 1783, will be released worldwide on February 6, 2026 via Next Door Records. The title refers to the year when over 3000 people of African descent boarded 81 ships and sailed out of New York. These were the so-called Black Loyalists: some of them free people, many of them still enslaved, who fought for the British in exchange for the promise of land and freedom. Arriving in Nova Scotia, they were given the poorest housing, little food, few supplies. Yet they survived and went on to found Black settlements across the province. Descended directly from those first settlers, Aquakultre has created a profound concept album that is deeply rooted in his own rich family history.
AQUAKULTRE PRESENTS: 1783 LIVE
Aquakultre Presents: 1783 Live will feature a full band (guitar, keyboards, drums, bass, and multiple vocals) performing music from the album in a high production-value setting. The production will include bespoke wardrobe, backdrop and projections, set pieces, and lighting design. More than just a concert, this event is designed with community-building goals as a priority. Foremost, Aquakultre means to bring Black audiences into arts presentation spaces with music and storytelling that speaks directly to them, in venues that enact their commitment to inclusivity and the wellbeing of diverse audiences. Aquakultre also means to help bring in and acclimatize audiences of all ages and backgrounds to Black Nova Scotian artistry and storytelling in a way that is authentic and truthful in the message, joyful and celebratory in the vibe.
Audiences will come away with full hearts, and a new understanding and appreciation of the contributions Black Nova Scotians have made and continue to make to our shared history.
