Claiming to know a short-cut, Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood) leads three settler families (headed by Will Patton and Michelle Williams) over the Cascade Mountains in 1845 only to wind up lost on the punishing salt flats. The settlers start to challenge each other as they are confronted by a series of life or death choices.
