“In the Spirit of Colour” invites viewers into a direct and personal encounter with colour, where perception and feeling remain closely intertwined.
Reynolds explores the tension between the structural and the gestural, where unexpected marks or interactions between pigments can redirect the composition. The result is a body of work that feels active and searching, attentive to both material and perception.
Reynolds' work is grounded in a sustained engagement with colour as both subject and structure. For the artist, colour remains the most compelling and demanding element of painting, offering an ongoing field of challenge and discovery.
Across the exhibition, surfaces shift between thin washes, luminous glazes, and dense passages of impasto, revealing a process that is both deliberate and responsive. Brushes, scrapers, and knives are all brought into play, allowing each work to develop through a balance of control and chance.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Ross Reynolds studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1974 to 1978 and later worked with D. L. Stevenson and Son Ltd, gaining in depth knowledge of artist materials.
