Anne Launcelott is a travel and street photographer whose practice centres around people and the textures of everyday life. In 2020, as international travel came to a halt due to COVID, she was commissioned by SSP Publications to create one hundred portraits of Nova Scotians for a book. The project resulted in the publication of “We Are Nova Scotia” in May 2022 and forms the basis of this exhibition.
Photographed across the province during a period of public health restrictions, these works reflect a particular moment in time. Launcelott travelled through urban and rural communities, meeting individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Her approach remained consistent. She sought proximity, working close to her subjects to produce images that hold both immediacy and specificity. Each portrait is grounded in place, shaped by the conditions under which it was made.
The exhibition brings together images that speak to the varied experiences of Nova Scotians during the pandemic. Some subjects appear in familiar environments tied to work or daily routine, while others occupy less conventional settings. The photographs do not attempt to generalize. Instead, they accumulate into a broader account of the province, built from individual encounters.
About the Artist:
Launcelott was born in Nottingham, England, and grew up in Ottawa. She has lived in Halifax for more than forty years. She began photographing at the age of fifteen and worked primarily in black and white for over two decades before transitioning to digital colour in 2010. Her work has been exhibited widely in Canada and internationally and is held in several public collections. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists.
Anne Launcelott’s “We Are Nova Scotia” opening reception, Sat. June 6, 2026, 12-2 p.m. Light refreshments served, all welcome. Exhibition continues through July 25.
