Concept:
Inscapes, the guiding principle of this exhibition, reveals the inner essence of a place. Rather than focusing on surface details, Inscape seeks to uncover the felt resonance of a forest floor through an intuitive process, revealing connections between its various elements: stones, water, moss, trees, leaves, and roots that intertwine, forming unique relationships with one another.
Inspiration:
I reflected on my personal perceptions of a forest landscape to generate an AI lyric. I further modified this to ensure an accurate interpretation. As an extension, I explored using AI to generate a song, which helped to guide both the working process of the artwork and the final product.

The Forest Floor
Roots draw lines across the ground
Crossing, looping over stone
A quiet network is exposed
With earth and sediment holding tight
Layers beneath my feet
Soft Moss lays a living skin
A green cover, cool and thin
Cushions what is growing
And shelters what lies within.
Nothing remains still or done
It breathes, it feeds, it carries on
Fallen trees have settled in
Giving back what they once grew
Fungi bloom in scattered light
Colour breaking through the soil
Soft Moss lays a living skin
Holding change where it begins
Nothing remains still or done
It breathes, it feeds, it carries on
River cuts the forest through
Flowing, roaring, sometimes still
It draws on sound and movement here
Against the quiet of the ground
I leave the trail but carry home
The rhythm written in the ground
Nothing remains still or done
It breathes, it feeds, it carries on

Cheryl Mootoo is a former art and technology educator and architect, now focused on developing an emerging visual art and photography practice exploring the intersection of natural and built environments. Her work spans photography, painting, and mixed media—each medium serving to uncover the quiet truths of place, memory, and narrative.
Cheryl aims to create a body of work driven by texture, gesture, and expressive form. Her practice is shaped by intuition, seeking meaning in imperfection and meditating on the presence of time, space, and the human impulse to see beyond what is immediately visible.
