DREW KLASSEN | CASA DE FLORES
July 11th - August 2nd

Wolfville, NS - Harvest Gallery is pleased to present Casa de Flores by Drew Klassen featuring his latest collection of emotive & expressive floral acrylic paintings.

Drew Klassen was born in Toronto in 1964, (mis)spent his youth in Winnipeg, and in 1986 went to Halifax to study drawing and sculpture at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. Following NSCAD, he taught himself to paint while supporting himself by varied means. While teaching English in Japan, Klassen began to exhibit his work, and on his return to Canada in 1998 he established a consistent studio practice and began to exhibit regularly in Canada.

Klassen's flower paintings engage in a dialogue with the rich tradition of European still life painting.
As with painters in that tradition, he draws attention to beauty, fragility, and the passage of time.
His compositions echo the visual abundance found in historical floral still life's but depart from tradition through a distinctly personal sensibility. Rather than emphasizing allegorical narratives or displays of wealth, his paintings focus on the emotional and sensory experience of the shapes and arrangements of flowers. Loose brushwork, vibrant colour relationships, and an emphasis on atmosphere, invite viewers to engage with the subject in the present moment.

By balancing historical reference with contemporary expression, Klassen's work honours the legacy of traditional European floral painting while transforming familiar botanical subjects and compositions into meditations on observation, memory, and the enduring human attraction to the fleeting beauty of the natural world.

In this series of works, Klassen builds on an intensive study of the works of the Spanish painter Juan de Arellano, from a recent residency in Granada, Spain; but imbued with the wit, vibrancy and discord of the Mexican TV series 'Casa de Flores'.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 11th, from 1-3 pm. Guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments and are encouraged to spend time with the works and reflect on the collection.
