Filmed in Nova Scotia, Dancing on the Elephant is a new feature film about friendship, aging, and living with dignity.
When Nora (Sheila McCarthy) suffers a minor stroke, her sons decide it’s time for her to move into Shady Rest Retirement Home. Independent and fiercely resistant to being sidelined, Nora is convinced that her best years are behind her—until she meets Edna (Mary Walsh), an outspoken, irreverent resident who refuses to quietly accept old age. Together, the two women form an unlikely friendship and embark on a journey to reclaim their freedom, autonomy, and sense of adventure. Along the way, they challenge assumptions about aging, confront loss and memory, and discover that it’s never too late to live boldly.
The film premiered at the 2025 Atlantic International Film Festival. and has also screened at Cinfest Sudbury, Edmonton International Film Festival, and St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. At AIFF, Walsh won the Joan Orenstein and David Renton Award for best performance, and Angela Baker won the award for Best Atlantic Editor
