ABOUT THE 1PM TALKArtist Jordan Shaw will discuss his process, inspiration, and the evolution of the projects in his "Data as Material" exhibition.

He will demo how his electronic textile works, how he sources material (digital and physical), and walk through various tools and software he has created to plan and create the artworks themselves.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
These artworks bridge the digital and physical realms, challenging viewers to consider how data systems shape their environments, behaviours, and identities.

Sculptures translate live and recorded datasets into forms made from wood, steel, concrete, and acrylic. Using a combination of machine-aided tooling alongside hand-painted and woven works, these pieces embody the patterns and fluctuations hidden within ubiquitous digital flows.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jordan Shaw is a Toronto‑based artist and creative technologist whose interdisciplinary practice melds sculpture, electronics, generative code, data visualization—and even textile crafts—to reveal the hidden architectures of our everyday environments. Born and raised in Scarborough, he spent summers on Cape Breton Island learning rug‑hooking from his grandmother, a spark that led him to explore how craft, code, and emerging technologies intersect. Shaw holds a B.I.T. in Interactive Multimedia & Design from Carleton University and Algonquin College (2008) and an MFA in Digital Futures from OCAD University (2017). Through immersive installations, media sculptures, light‑based works, electronic textiles, and layered “data paintings,” he invites audiences to become active collaborators in uncovering the networks that shape our relationships with each other and with nature. He’s also led hands‑on creative‑coding workshops and contributes to several open‑source projects that underpin his practice. His work has appeared in solo exhibitions such as Data as Material (2025) and Refactored Landscapes (2019), and been commissioned for public art events from Nuit Blanche to Lumière, igNIGHT and Winterfest. Shaw is represented by Micak Contemporary Art Gallery in Aurora, Ontario.
