Hugo
Throughout his extraordinary career, Academy Award-wining director Martin Scorsese has brought his unique vision and dazzling gifts to life in a series of unforgettable films. This time the legendary storyteller invites you to join him on a thrilling journey to a magical world based on Brian Selznick’s award-winning, imaginative New York Times best-seller, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
Hugo is the astonishing adventure that blends the tale of a wily, resourceful, imperilled boy and the history of cinema. The quest to unlock a secret left to him by his father will transform Hugo and all those around him, revealing a safe and loving place he can call home.
The cast includes: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Emily Mortimer, Michael Stuhlbarg.
Hugo won five Academy Awards and received six additional nominations.
For a lover of cinema, there are flashbacks that trace the history and career of Georges Melies (1861–1938). You may have seen his most famous short film, A Trip to the Moon (1902), in which space voyagers enter a ship that is shot from a cannon toward the moon; the vessel pokes the Man in the Moon in the eye. Scorsese has made documentaries about great films and directors, and here he brings those skills to storytelling. We see Melies (who built the first movie studio) using fantastical sets and bizarre costumes to make films with magical effects — all of them hand-tinted, frame by frame. (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times)
Scorsese builds Hugo in the Méliès manner, creating a complete, ravishing Parisian world…and reveling in the sheer transporting joy of it. Hugo will take your breath away. (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone)
