In honor of two landmark anniversaries and the dawn of digital projection at King's Theatre, the Annapolis Basin Community Band and King's Theatre Film Society are hosting a Gala celebration on Saturday, September 22, from 7 to 10 p.m at King's Theatre. The evening will include a screening of the film classic, Singin' In The Rain with Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. Tickets are $10, with all proceeds going to the theatre's general fund.

The theme of the evening, "What a Glorious Feeling," based on lyrics from the film, starts with a reception in the lobby of the theatre. On stage, conductor Jolene Buchholz will strike up the Annapolis Basin Community Band with movie film scores and other favourites. This year marks the band's 20th anniversary. "We're delighted to collaborate with the Film Society on this momentous event," Buchholz, who founded the band in 1992, said. "It's definitely going to be a glorious evening on many accounts."

King's Theatre Film Society is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Over the years the society has brought 100s of foreign and alternative films to the area and built up a loyal following. But over the past few years it has seen its choices for 35mm films decline while distribution costs have risen substantially. In a move to safe keep the movie-house aspect of King's, the society helped launch a fundraiser last fall, Fast Forward, to purchase a digital protector and ancillary equipment. To date, the campaign has secured $45,000 in individual and community contributions and $35,585 through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. The projection equipment including a new screen and eight speakers were installed in early September.

Andi Rierden, chair of King's Film Society Committee, said they chose Singing' in the Rain for the Gala, in part, because it is the ultimate feel good movie, which fits well with the community's spirit. "The fact that so many individuals and community groups successfully contributed to King's conversion from 35mm film to digital projection is certainly something for us all to sing and dance about," Rierden said.

Released 60 years ago, the film was directed by Stanley Donen and Kelly and portrayed the dawn of talkies on the big screen. Last year the American Film Institute singled out Singin' In The Rain as the most memorable movie musical of all time.

Rierden added, "Just as the characters in Singing’ in the Rain said goodbye to the silent film era, the King's can now wave farewell to the era of celluloid."

King's Theatre Film Society will begin its Fall Film Series the following Tuesday, September 25. To view the film selections go to http://kingstheatre.ca and click on "Film Society."
