Gus Van Sant directs a contemporary eco-drama with Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, Hal Holbrook, John Krasinski and Rosemarie DeWitt. Steve (Damon), an ace corporate salesman, is sent with partner Sue (McDormand) to close a key rural town in his company's expansion plans. Economic decline has hit hard, the outsiders see the vulnerable locals as likely to agree to the company's offer for drilling rights to their properties. An easy job for the duo becomes complicated when a respected schoolteacher (Holbrook) objects with support from a grassroots campaign led by Dustin (Krasinski), as well as the interest of a local, Alice (DeWitt). Promised Land explores carbon-powered America at the crossroads where big business and the strength of small-town community converge.
