Part of France’s new wave of near-silent cinema, this is a comedy from Belgian Dominique Abel, Canadian Fiona Gordon and France’s Bruno Romy. Shaped by years on the road as neo-vaudevillians, their sensibility owes as much to 19th-century stage business as to Chaplin and Tati. In Le Havre, hotel night clerk, Dom, dreams of a motor scooter when his bicycle fails him. Then barefoot Fiona arrives, says she’s a fairy and offers to grant him three wishes for a room. These actors have “ devised their own original style of comic performance, taken it to a rare level of refinement [revealing] the real version of something you’ve previously only seen imitated.”
