Komona (Rachel Mwanza), a 14 year old girl, tells her unborn child the story of how she became a rebel. When she was 12 she was kidnapped by the rebel army, forced to carry a AK 47 and to use it. Her only escape and friend is Magicien, a 15 year old boy who wants to marry her. Despite the horrors and daily grind of war, Komona and Magicien fall in love. Around them, war rages on...A tale set in Sub-Saharan Africa, Rabelle is a love story between two young souls caught in a violent world yet filled with beauty and magic. Rebelle is a life lesson, a story of human resilience. Written and directed by Montreal’s Kim Nguyen, Rebelle was short listed for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and recently won Best Film from the Canadian Screen Awards and New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. While undeniably grim material, Nguyen leavens it with delicacy and tact, conveying violence by implication and atmosphere rather than through direct depiction. The performances from the mostly nonprofessional cast are vivid and authentic, particularly the extraordinary Rachel Mwanza who won Best Actress awards at Canadian Screen Awards, Berlin's Silver Bear and Tribeca Film Festival. Nguyen spent ten years bringing this film to the screen, basing his script on the stories of actual child soldiers and shooting entirely on location in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His film offers an extraordinary portrait of survival.
