1: Lecture-Recital “The Devil and the Good Man”
Insights into the Human Condition in Words and Music
Goethe’s Faust is rollicking and ribald, sad and sardonic, a look at the human condition sometimes tragic, sometimes witty. Its story is as relevant today as it was when written 200 years ago. Humankind still aspires to something higher only to be pulled down by all the wonderful, awful promptings of a life that craves to be lived to the full.
Sergei Rachmaninoff was a composer who lived life to the full, a man so deeply impressed with Goethe’s masterpiece that he based his largest work for solo piano on it. This first evening brings both Goethe’s Faust and Rachmaninoff’s 1st sonata, Op. 28 to life in a talk given by Alan Fraser, illustrated from the piano, showing how many of the events and personalities of Faust are reflected in the music. More of a symphony for the piano than a piano sonata, Opus 28 condenses the deep emotional power of Faust (7 hours) into 45 minutes of beautiful and complex music. Knowing its dramatic content helps the listener plunge deeper into the emotional message of this vast sonata, which Fraser will play in its entirety after intermission. Come enjoy Fraser’s wit and wisdom in words and music – you will be changed!
II: Rachmaninoff Recital
5 Preludes, Sonata #2 in B flat minor, Sonata #1 in D minor
In this second evening, Fraser combines the same Sonata in D minor, Op. 28, with 5 preludes and Rachmaninoff’s other piano sonata, the B flat minor, Op. 32. This incredibly rich music of the Russian soul shows Rachmaninoff in all his varying moods and sonic landscapes, taking you on a journey through Mother Russia, the churches, the steppes the village fairs, the colours, sounds and smells of a vast and exotic land. And it offers you a second chance to hear the monumental Sonata in D minor, so rarely performed on the concert stage today. If you attend the first evening, you’ll have had a chance to digest and reflect on Fraser’s de-mystification of the Faust-Sonata connection, and you’ll appreciate its dramatic message all the more.
Each evening is a complete recital in itself, but we offer a specially priced ticket good for both events, giving you a chance both to learn something new about a fascinating part of the classical music repertoire, and to enjoy the best of Russian piano music played by one of Canada’s best pianists. Each evening is "a stand alone" concert complete in itself, but attending both will give greater significance, enjoyment and understanding to this music and its related literature
