Musique Royale presents Peter Togni, Suzie LeBlanc, Andrea Ludwig, John Potter, Charles Daniels, and Jeff Reilly in RESPONSIO

Peter Togni’s Responsio is a contemporary response to the medieval poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame. Machaut’s mass is one of the great masterpieces of medieval music and the earliest complete setting of the liturgical mass attributable to a single composer. Created in 1364, Machaut weaved his own melodies with chant from the 9th century. Echoing Machaut’s approach, Togni has integrated newly composed material into the Messe de Nostre Dame, adding a third tier of depth to a musical process that began over 1,000 years ago.

Togni has drawn upon the medieval practice of troping, a technique used by medieval composers to respond to existing liturgical music and texts. Tropes were an embellishment of chant melodies, or, in some cases, were poetic reflections or commentaries on liturgical texts. Togni’s tropes reflect, comment, and embellish with the contemporary voice of the bass clarinet and the potent and soaring quality of the world class vocal quartet gathered for this tour. His composition challenges and refutes Machaut’s bare medieval voice, juxtaposing with bursts of bass clarinet improvisation. The role of the clarinetist becomes that of a time traveler, bringing Machaut’s 14th century creation into the heart of the 21st century.

This dynamic, fluid, and powerful performance will feature Suzie Leblanc, soprano; Andrea Ludwig, mezzo soprano; John Potter, tenor; Charles Daniels, tenor; and Jeff Reilly, bass clarinet.
