Halifax’s own, soprano Nicole Jordan, and her ensemble, Alchemy, will be coming to Nova Scotia from The Netherlands for concerts at the end of October. The program is called In Vocation and tells the story of a modern-day witch, using music from the 17th century. Just in time for Hallowe’en!
In Vocation begins with Jordan as a herbal woman who, through music, helpfully answers questions about health and love. She gradually slips to the ‘dark side’ after suffering a broken heart. With this descent, the music becomes more bad-tempered and witchy!
Jordan brings with her from Holland: lute-player Israel Golani, and percussionist Udo Demandt. Local organist, Garth MacPhee, music director of St. George’s Round Church, will join Alchemy in Halifax and Wolfville. The music for In Vocation includes French love songs, and English songs by composers such as Henry Purcell and John Dowland. Much of the music has been edited and transcribed from original sources by Acadia University’s Gordon J Callon, Professor Emeritus of Music.
CDs will be available for purchase at all concerts.
About Nicole Jordan:
Nicole Jordan graduated from Acadia University and has made her career in The Netherlands as an early music, chamber music, and opera singer. Besides Alchemy, she has sung with celebrated ensembles such as The Harp Consort and Concerto Copenhagen. In 2012/2013 she was a Visiting Artist in Voice at the University of Trinidad & Tobago and in 2014 she will join the Royal Danish Opera for their production of Porgy and Bess. Jordan loves interdisciplinary arts and often incorporates dance and storytelling into her music performances. Her ensemble comes in a variety of shapes and forms depending on the program.
