The movie is based on the true story of an Irish woman, Philomena Lee, who was forced by the Catholic Church to give up her child because she wasn't married. She spends the next 50 years of her life searching for him.

The movie, which stars Judi Dench, is adapted from author and journalist Martin Sixsmith's book 'The Lost Child of Philomena Lee'.

Philomena kept her secret for 50 years, but she also secretly kept looking for her son Anthony, without success. In 2002, when she was living in England, she finally shared her secret with her family, and she and her daughter Jane decided to look for her long-lost son. They approached Sixsmith because he was a journalist, and asked for his help.

According to the author (Sixsmith), the film is "a sort of detective story, looking for what had happened to Anthony," as well as "a sort of road movie because the characters Philomena and Martin, played by Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, go on this road trip looking for Anthony." He went on to add that it's also "about issues of love and loss, and it's about issues of injustice, really, and how people respond to the injustices that have been done to them."
