Inspired by the life of Ron Woodroof, (Matthew McConaughey), celebrated Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y., The Young Victoria, Café de Flore) puts his story squarely on McConaughey who carries the burden gracefully with what might be a career-best performance (current Oscar nominee). An electrician and rodeo cowboy in 1985, well into a self-centred, unexamined existence Texan Ron Woodroof is blindsided by an H.I.V. diagnosis with a month to live. A dearth of approved treatments and medications sends him to Mexico, where he learns of alternatives that challenge authorities and the scientific/medical community including his concerned physician, Dr. Eve Saks (Jennifer Garner). An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally in fellow AIDS patient Rayon (Oscar nominee Jared Leto), a transsexual who shares Ron’s lust for life and entrepreneurial spirit: to avoid government sanctions, they establish a “buyers club,” to which those with H.I.V pay dues for access and this pioneering underground collective thrives. With a growing community of new friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education and acceptance in this story of the transformative power of resilience. McConaughey “does work that is pretty much astounding… not simply [his] physical transformation. . .it’s [his] spiritual transformation that is most remarkable.” David Denby, The New Yorker (Six Oscar nominations.)
