Steve McQueen brings to the big screen an incredible story based on a memoir. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Oscar nominee, Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man, violinist, farmer and family man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty, personified in a malevolent slave owner (Oscar nominee, Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive but to retain his dignity in his fight for survival and freedom. Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life. “Stark, visceral and unrelenting…not just a great film but a necessary one.” The Guardian. (Nine Oscar nomination.)
