In December, FFS booked Phil Comeau’s new documentary, a portrait of an artist-activist extraordinaire, because we looked forward to celebrating Frédéric Back’s 90th birthday in April. And celebrate we will, but not for his 90th year: “The world of animation grew darker” when Frédéric Back died on Christmas Eve. A prolific illustrator and graphic artist in addition to being a roundly honoured filmmaker and animator, Back was “the most be- loved” artist in animation, and one of the great talents of our time. In striving to depict the beauty of the Earth, Back was a most persuasive environmental activist. This film follows his exceptional path from childhood in France to his arrival in Québec, exploring sources of his inspiration and his concern for the Earth. It is a tribute not only to the artist and man, but also to his message of simple universal values, inspired ideas and poetic, luminous images. He won Oscars for Crac (1982) and L’homme qui plantait des arbres (1987).
