Le démantèlement (The Auction) (F) May 25: 8 p.m.
Set in the beautiful pastoral landscape of Saguenay, Québec, Sébastien Pilote’s poignant family drama follows rugged sheep farmer Gaby (Gabriel Arcand) who loves his two daughters, whom he almost never sees. In order to help his eldest (a well known opportunist), Gaby decides, when he can’t get a bank loan, to sell everything, including the ancestral home, and move to the city to live in a modest apartment. While everyone attempts to dissuade him, seeing this as too great a sacrifice for a man loved and respected in the region, Gaby is resolved, resigned, seeing his actions as a kind of liberation from the only life he has ever known. Arcand, in a world-weary, King Lear–inspired role, delivers a subtle, moving performance as Gaby. He reflects a rural Québec that struggles between a vanished past and an uncertain future—looking both backwards and forwards.
