Aspiring comedian Donna (Jenny Slate) draws from her twenty something female life for her hysterical, relatable, no-holds-barred stage humour. When she gets dumped, loses her job and becomes pregnant (an unprotected drunken hook-up), she is catapulted into independent womanhood, learning what it means to be as brave in life as on the stage. Jenny Slate’s breakout performance is packed with raw, energetic comedy and poignant human honesty. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the unwanted pregnancy with a matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen, one that some may find off-putting. But in Donna, Slate and Robespierre crafted a character for the ages: a female viewers recognize, cheer for and love.
