Over a decade, inventor Tim Jenison attempts to solve a Western art mystery: How did 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer paint so photo-realistically, 150 years before photography? He tackles an epic laboratory research project to test his theory and also goes to Delft, where Vermeer painted; to north Yorkshire to meet artist David Hockney who wrote of Vermeer, and Buckingham Palace to see the Queen's Vermeer. Entertaining, profound, the film poses fascinating questions about art, and obsession.
