A lush period bio-pic of Dido Elisabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who was born into slavery as the illegitimate child of a Caribbean slave and a Royal Navy officer. Her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watkins) raise Belle with many privileges, yet her skin colour remains a barrier, clouding her future. But Belle helps shape Lord Chief Justice Mansfield who launches England’s abolitionist movement with his Somerset Case ruling of 1772.
