A group of gypsy smugglers are frustrated in their attempts to bring their contraband into Seville by an incorruptible officer in the Civil Guard named Don Jose. In order to help her kinsmen, the sultry provocative Carman seduces him, whereupon he abandons not only his post, but his childhood sweetheart as well.

When his infatuation leads him to kill a fellow guard in order to prevent Carmen's arrest, Don Jose becomes a wanted fugitive.

The capricious, fickle Carmen resents his possessiveness and leaves him for a famous bullfighter (toreador) named Escamillo. Obsessed and frustrated, a diraught Don Jose follows Carmen to the bullring with tragic consequences.

Carmen is one of the most famous and best loved operas in the world. It is filled with many famous well-recognized arias. For example, the melody of the famous Toreador's aria was once used in a Heinz ketchup ad!

The Met has performed it nearly 1,000 times, and the music is some of the most recognizable in all of opera.

The Met's hit production this year stars two of its leading ladies, Elina Garanca and Anita Rachvelishvili. Anita Rachvelishvili made a sensational Met debut in the title role in 2010. The world-renown opera tells the story of Carmen and Don Jose, whose doomed love for her destroys them both.
