Composed by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868)
Libretto by Cesare Sterbin
Premiered 1816
Setting: 18th century Seville Spain
In the 18th century an elderly man (Bartolo) is the guardian of his beautiful, young, wealthy niece (Rosina). He confines her to his home as he hopes to secure her wealth by marrying her.
Meanwhile, a Spanish aristocrat (Count Almaviva) falls in love with Rosina. He conceals his status and wealth by calling himself a poor student by the name of Lindoro, and in this disguise, serenades her. Almaviva then enlists the help of Figaro, a barber in Siviglia to help him gain access to Rosina. However, her guardian obsessively keeps her confined and isolated and their first plan fails.
A second plan is hatched in which Almaviva disguises himself as a student of the music teacher (Basilio) who is also Bartolo's right hand man. Under this guise Almaviva is able to meet with Rosina and win her hand (while Figaro simultaneously steals Bartolo's house key for the young couple while shaving him).
Later however, Bartolo manages to convince Rosina that Lindoro will attempt to sell her to Count Almaviva. Furious, she agrees to wed Bartolo.
Later that night, Almaviva and Figaro steal into Bartolo's house and eventually all is cleared up when Almaviva reveals that he is also Lindoro. At that moment the notary arrives and marries the two young lovers just prior to Bartolo bursting in too late.
The fact that in this hilarious comedy you are never more than a short recitative (section of talking) away from the "vocal fireworks" that Rossini is so well known for - his incredible ability to push the limits of human voice as a complex and versatile instrument in everything from solos to quintets makes this one of the most enduring operas since its debut approx. 200 years ago.
