The first thing that hits you is the voice. Samantha Martin’s is a force of nature, one of those voices that grabs you by the throat while causing the hairs on the back of your neck to tingle. The likes of her friend Serena Ryder and Janis Joplin come to mind as reference points.
– Kerry Doole, Exclaim!

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar have been nominated for four Maple Blues Awards!
· Female Vocalist of the Year
· New Artist or Group of the Year
· Recording/Producer of the Year
· Songwriter of the Year

Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion. On first listen, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice. Cigarette-ravaged and whiskey-soaked in the extreme, Martin’s pipes are capable of conveying an infinite range of emotions, bringing one to tears in one instance and in the next uplifting one’s soul with an empowered declaration of hope, faith and desire.

As a vocalist her roots lie squarely within the wellspring of powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Tina Turner, Bettye LaVette, Lucinda Williams and, perhaps most closely, Bonnie Bramlett. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and southern soul with a hint of roots country and sixties pop while her lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years.

“The ultimate joy of reviewing new albums is occasionally getting totally besotted by the first listen…SEND THE NIGHTINGALE by Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar is one not to be missed. Feel free to choose your own stand-out track from the many on offer, however this review is signing off with the simple statement that this is a ‘stand-out album”.
– Three Chords and the Truth (UK)

Following the success of her Spring 2014 EP ‘Mississippi Sun’ (Dollartone), Martin spent the majority of the summer touring across Canada in venues and festivals as well as touring in Germany. Upon returning home to Toronto, Martin performed at Massey Hall for the Toronto Blues Society’s ‘Women’s Blues Revue’ (NOV 2014) and was invited to open for The Blind Boys of Alabama at Roy Thompson Hall (DEC 2014). Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar released the debut album ‘Send The Nightingale’ (FEB 2015) to glowing reviews by both fans and critics alike. In this new gospel-infused, blues and soul formation known as Delta Sugar, Martin is set to keep raising the bar for herself and her audiences.

“Martin has an undoubted talent that can only develop as she follows her career path and this album suggests that the Canadian may well come to wider attention as time goes on but right now this nightingale is singing, if not sweetly, then soulfully and in a way that commands attention”. – Lonesome Highway

While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, Send the Nightingale is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she likes to term her “co-vocalists” (as opposed to “backup vocalists”), Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already soul-melting parts. Add to that, guitarist Mikey McCallum’s Delta-inspired and mystery-inflected guitar lines.“Whoa, and hello! Here’s a voice that comes along once in a generation, and only on a blue moon… the all-original material is seamless, never dropping the ball on the right lyric, tone and emotion. This is a group that just gets it, gets it all.”

– Bob Mersereau, Top 100 Canadian Singles / CBC Fredericton

“You may not know it yet, but Samantha Martin is a rock star, she’ll tear your heart out one note at a time.” – Serena Ryder

Her success is a combination of rare talent and hard work. Martin’s past includes a solo album (2008) and full-length roots-rock album with then band ‘The Haggard’ (2012). Recorded in July 2011 at Toronto’s Lincoln County Social Club, co-produced by the band and John Dinsmore (producer and multi-instrumentalist with Kathleen Edwards, NQ Arbuckle, Sarah Harmer) the album boldly traverses deep southern soul, roots/reggae and 50’s rock n roll. Few artists are able to incorporate such broad genres successfully and present a cohesive sound all their own.

“Listening to Send The Nightingale, one can only wonder why Toronto based singer Samantha Martin isn’t already a major star. This can be said without a hint of exaggeration as Send The Nightingale presents a talent fully formed to glorious effect. This lady owns a full understanding of what ‘soul’ really means and a world-weary voice with the kind of power and control to get the job done properly.” – Rod Nicholson, Scene Magazine

In a short time, Samantha Martin has been featured at festivals of all kinds, including: Calgary Folk Festival, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival, Dawson City Music Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Summerfolk Festival and Shelter Valley Folk Festival to name a few.

“The latest incarnation of this artist results in fabulous harmonies worked out and delivered to perfection along with very distinctive guitar sounds cleverly intertwined with the vocals… she is utterly unique, the blood of a past era of music is running through her veins and when she sings she’ll stop you dead in your tracks.” –Justin Stone, Fatea Magazine

Her successful official showcases at the TBS Blues Summit (Toronto, Jan 2015) and Folk Alliance International Conference (Kansas City, Feb 2015) are sure to keep this big-voice-little-lady busy for future years to come.
