King's Shorts Festival of Ten Minute Plays, now in its tenth season, promises another entertaining presentation. Again this year, Phil Milo will act as MC.
Started as a theatrical experiment in 2007, the Festival has become a fixture in the cultural life of the Annapolis Valley, this year attracting 83 manuscripts. Scripts were received from Canada, the United States, Europe and New Zealand. Since King's Shorts Festival of Ten Minute Plays began, a total of 496 submissions have been received.
Of the eight plays to be performed, two will be selected by Theatre Nova Scotia as especially deserving and will be awarded first and second place prizes of $200 and $100, respectively. The coveted People's Choice Award will be determined by those in attendance at all three performances. All awards will be presented by representatives of Theatre Nova Scotia following the Sunday performance. The selected plays to be presented are:
Chase the Ace – Charles Salmon, Halifax, directed by Carolyn Crowell
Hot Flush – Sue Higgs, Head Jeddore, directed by Jane DeWolfe
On Three – Mark Redmayne and Santiago Arcila, Vancouver, directed by John MacEachern
Miami – Gene Dejoie, California, directed by Kelley Pozzolo
Never Give Up – James Hutchison, Calgary, directed by Ron Wesman
The Agency Sent Me – Jim Prime, New Minas, directed by Verilea Ellis
The Darwin Club – Rachel Cooper, Canning, directed by Gail Chester
Top the Timer – John Anthony Brodston, Nebraska, directed by Jeff Styles
Four of the above named playwrights have had their plays presented at King's Shorts in years past. They are Charles Salmon, Sue Higgs, Jim Prime and Rachel Cooper.
