TRUTH, RECONCILIATION & THE PATH FORWARD
Canadians have a great opportunity facing them, one which will assist us in righting some wrongs as we move forward into the 21st century.
Since colonial times, Aboriginal people have been treated as second class citizens in their own country. With the advent of Confederation came the Indian Act with institutional atrocities like reserves and residential schools. In 2015 the Truth & Reconciliation Commission released its report on the residential school fiasco, including 94 recommendations to enable Canada to move forward. Justin Trudeau promised to enact all of these recommendations. It is a big promise.
Utilizing excerpts from Trick Or Treaty?, the recently released National Film Board production by Alanis Obomsawin, as well as Pam Palmater’s interview at Acadia University last year, plus some other relevant documentary & video clips, we will look at some of the issues facing both Aboriginal & Settler people in Canada as we all attempt to reconcile our relationship: Health, Education, Poverty, Housing, Suicide, Incarceration, Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, and Treaties.
Please do not bring any guilt or admonishments to the session. It is not required. What is needed is strong hearts & steady minds to find restorative & compassionate ways to reconcile with our Mi’kmaw brothers & sisters locally, as well as addressing the national picture.
