As a formative and respected voice in Montreal's thriving arts scene, Catherine Kidd has forged a reputation over the past decade for raising the bar in the field of performance literature. She has toured her work extensively to festivals throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, UK, US and Canada. Her published writing includes two critically-acclaimed collections of poetry (Sea Peach book/cd, Bipolar Bear book/dvd) and more recently the novel Missing the Ark (all three available through conundrum press).
Although October 2nd will represent Catherine's first full-length performance since relocating to Port George, NS, some King's Theatre patrons will recall her brief appearance at last February's Valentine's Day fundraiser.
This unique performance will showcase seven individual pieces spanning the last seven years of Catherine's career as a touring artist. The tales are interlinked by her signature use of zoological themes to illuminate truths about the human condition, yet each story is also a world unto itself – with its own original soundscape by long-time collaborator DJ Jack 'Beets' and often with video backdrop to set the scene.
Through her arresting verbal imagery, charismatic stage presence, storyteller's knack for weaving a fine yarn, and poet's attention to rhythm and rhyme, Kidd fills in the features of an imaginative universe where anything is possible: a counting sheep escorts the listener into other people's dreams, a philosophizing captive polar bear paces backwards in hope of returning home to the ice caps. In this landscape, an encounter with a South African lioness dying by the roadside has resonance for the overall health of the human community, and a Slovenian salamander known as a 'human fish' becomes both messenger of peace and emblem of transformation.
Kidd's message is ultimately uplifting. With her off-beat humour and the compelling drive of her narrative style, she has enchanted audiences around the globe, making her one of the nation's most inspiring and surprising voices for page and stage. This show is not to be missed.
