PROGRAM I - AUG 25, 26
THE MAN IN BLACK – Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie – A huge audience favourite last year, The Man in Black was so popular that FODAR has brought it back for 2016. Set to six songs recorded by the late great Johnny Cash, this poignant, witty, and constantly moving work is a compelling illustration of why James Kudelka is one of North America’s most sought-after choreographers.
LIVE FROM THE FLASH PAN – Rhonda Baker – Mocean Dance – The brilliant Rhonda Baker returns to FODAR in Cory Bowle’s irreverent, highly physical and multilayered look at the disintegration of a performer. Baker takes us on a downward spiral, progressing through the smoky jazz tones of Ibrahim’s Barakaat, the crunch riffs of The Wait by the Pretenders, the pounding of Gorillaz’s Punk, and the driving rhythms of Radiohead’s Life in a Glass House.
BEING AND NOTHINGNESS – Greta Hodgkinson – The National Ballet’s Greta Hodgkinson gives a transcendent performance in a work set to a gripping musical score by Philip Glass and choreographed by National principal dancer and choreographic associate Guillaume Coté. Inspired by the works of existential philosopher Jean Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness is a raw and achingly beautiful piece.
CURIOUS SCHOOLS OF THEATRICAL DANCING – Michael Caldwell – FODAR will remount another classic modern dance work by the legendary Danny Grossman. This signature solo piece, which had its world premiere in 1976, was inspired by the dance, acrobatics and pantomine, of Commedia Dell’Arte in the 18th century. A solitary clown is encased in a circus ring and forced to perform for an unseen master. Toronto-based, critically acclaimed choreographer and dancer Michael Caldwell will dance the role of the clown.
