REDEMPTION SONGS, a presentation based on a new book by Halifax author Jon Tattrie, explores how Bob Marley was inspired to write his famous song by a speech by Marcus Garvey in Sydney, Cape Breton.

"We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery
because while some might free the body
none but ourselves can free the mind."
— Marcus Garvey, Sydney, 1937

Jon Tattrie’s book weaves a tale of how racism came to our civilization, and how we can move forward from here. Jon will take us through Nova Scotia's chequered past, from Champlain's arrival in the early 1600s and meeting Mi’kmaw Grand Chief Membertou, to the immigration of Black Loyalists to the fledgling province in the late 1700s, plus the Maroons presence & evangelical Richard Preston's mission here in the early 1800s. All of this background leads us to the powerful American orator Marcus Garvey's speech in 1937 to the people of Sydney. And we'll learn about Garvey’s vision of the coming of Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia and head of the Rastafari, to reggae superstar Bob Marley's discovery of the inspirational lyrics of the final song on his last album.

♫ Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,
none but ourselves can free our minds.♫
