The Los Primos Project has been contributing to the education of an entire generation of musicians. Started in 1997 to help music education in Cuba deal with instrument shortages, and to inspire our young Nova Scotia musicians by giving them the opportunity to perform with Cuban music students and professionals.
In celebration of this 20 year milestone, Los Primos artistic director Jeff Goodspeed and international Cuban recording artist Augusto Enriquez, will lead Los Primos 2017 in a series of performances and Cuban music clinics through out Nova Scotia. Los Primos has raised over $500,000 for music education in Nova Scotia and delivered 700 instruments to musicians and schools in Cuba.
Los Primos 2017 will feature three of the most promising and inspired young musicians from Havana who have ever been part of this unique cultural exchange project.
Alison Enríquez is now studying grade 10 in Halifax on scholarship to the Armbrae Academy. She is playing in the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, appearing every Sunday at Stayners Sunday Jazz and performing solo and in small ensembles throughout the province. Not only is she a gifted violinist but she sings with the maturity and freedom of a seasoned professional.
Ahmed Alom is back in Havana after studying for 3 years in the most famous music school of Mexico City. He has now been accepted on full scholarship to the Manhattan School of music and will begin there this fall. He has won numerous international classical piano competitions but is also recognized in Havana as one of the very best latin jazz piano players they have produced.
Dayron Rodríguez started playing with professional bands in Havana when he was only 12 years old and has been doing it every since. He is the son of a cab driver and the first in his family to ever study music. He was a member of Los Primos 2012 and returned to Nova Scotia in 2014. He plays with the strength and sound of the master conga players for which Cuba is famous.
Los Primos 2017 will tour Nova Scotia performing at festivals and special events from July 4 to August 9.
