You won’t want to miss North Preston R&B/Hip-hop/Soul artist Reeny Smith and her six-piece band.
Winner of the 2016 Music Nova Scotia African Canadian Artist of the Year award, Reeny is a rising star who has been taking stages by storm. In fact, the night after she performs at King’s she is headlining the Mainstage at the Halifax Jazz Festival.
Raised in North Preston, Nova Scotia, Reeny has been singing and playing the piano since the age of five. Her family is a veritable who’s-who of Nova Scotia gospel and soul veterans: Wallace Smith Sr. and Jr., her grandfather and father, are former members of the Gospel Heirs (formed and still based at Saint Thomas); her father currently leads the Hallelujah Praise Choir, and her uncle is Carson Downey. Her R&B-flavoured songs are secular, but Smith’s emotion and expression are clearly rooted in gospel, with elements of hip-hop jazz, blues and funk.
Smith’s silky soulful voice—honed as a jazz major at St. F.X.—is undeniable. She’s accomplished much in a scant amount of time, including an opening slot for Grammy winner Lisa Fischer, winning three African Nova Scotian Music Association awards, and in 2015 being named Artist-in-Residence at Casino Nova Scotia. A sensitive, powerful performer, Smith will transfix you as she lifts you up.
