Program Two
SACRED GARDEN. Performed by: Danielle Baskerville, Bee Pallomina
A Canadian modern dance classic, this work was choreographed in 1986 by David Earle who describes it as “a poem of grief and compassion”. Set to the first movement of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s magnificent lament Stabat Mater, the work follows two women, constantly moving, yet confined by sorrow. Over the years Sacred Garden has evolved to become a depiction of Mary arriving at the site of her son’s crucifixion.

INDIGENOUS HOOP DANCING. Performed by:
Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo, Emily Kahente Diabo
Indigenous hoop dancing is a form of story telling that traces its origins back many centuries. It is still used in traditional healing ceremonies by many First Nations across North America. Over the years the hoop dance has evolved and now often incorporates new movements and intricate footwork.Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo is a professional dancer and choreographer performing and creating in many genres for over 25 years. She currently specializes in merging traditional First Nation’s dance with contemporary styles.

FLAMENCO DUET. Performed by: Maria Osende, Megan Matheson Hamilton
Perhaps Spain’s most popular export, flamenco dance is the product of countless generations and many cultures centred in the country’s Andalucian region. Choreographer Randy Glynn worked Atlantic Canada’s celebrated flamenco artists Maria Osende and Megan Matheson Hamilton to create El Reto (The Challenge), which has its world premiere at FODAR 2017.

BOYS WILL BE MEN. Performed by: Michael Caldwell, Louis Laberge-Côté
Boys Will Be Men is an absurdist work about the ways that masculinity, with its power relationships, and its competitiveness, obstructs the attempts men make to communicate. That out-of-control competition takes the form of a pas de deux, centering around a card table and a duel. The work is performed by two of Canada’s finest contemporary dancers and showcases their skill in executing challenging choreographic technique.
