A claymation sweet comedy wonder from Adam Elliot (AA winner- Harvie Krumpet) tells of a surprising friendship between a young Australian girl, Mary (Toni Collette’s voice) and aging New Yorker, Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Mary and Max have never met, yet they communicate via letter, becoming close companions separated by 1000s of miles. Mere plot description, however, cannot do justice to the utter originality of this film—from quirky, offbeat tone to sensuous, lavish visual look—combining black & white and colour palettes seamlessly. Most of all, its the cleverly-wrought protagonists that draw one in with their compelling stories and a desire to find a better life through the healing powers of friendship.
