Puccini’s Women: a Gallery of Soprano Heroines
A Revue Recital of Beautiful Melody
“Puccini’s Women: a Gallery of Soprano Heroines” showcases four Nova Scotia sopranos performing thirteen arias from eleven of the Italian master’s operas, ranging from some of world’s favorite songs to one or two you may never have heard from his earliest stage pieces Le Villi and Edgar.
The Revue was devised by Dr. Walter H. Kemp, Artistic Director of Opera Nova Scotia, for ‘Puccini 2008’, the 150th Birthday Year of the composer.
Share the moments of tribute, when the loves of his creative fancies come to say “Happy Birthday, Giacomo, the Master who gave us life”: some naive, some vulnerable, some tenderly pathetic, some worldly, some resourceful, but all with their own blend of passion and sentiment expressed in lyrical emotion. Once again we enjoy the luxurious warmth of the solos in which he clad Manon, Mimi, Musetta, Tosca, Cio-Cio-San . Once again we feel through his music the deep maternal sorrow of Sister Angelica, the nostalgic dreams of Magda in La Rondine, the frenzied grief of Fidelia lamenting her dead Edgar, the honest strength of that Girl of the Golden West, Minnie, the gentle smiles of the youthful Anna in Le Villi, the tears of loyal Liu. Like Lauretta, they all address their Babbino Caro, their “Beloved Daddy” on his special day. Who can resist these heroines, and the music Puccini gave them!
So who can resist being part of the audience of “Puccini’s Women” when they will sing for us again through the voices of Andrea Jeffrey, Ann Holton, Paula Rockwell, and Beth Hagerman. Puccini will be played by well-known HRM community actor Tony Marshall. Pianist is Dean Bradshaw.
