We are pleased to welcome the Maritime Concert Opera back to King’s Theatre. MCO is a semi-professional regional opera company based in Lunenburg which brings in-concert performances of great operas to many communities in Nova Scotia.
While they use professional soloists, their chorus and ethos are rooted firmly in their communities. A concert opera brings you all the gorgeous singing of complete operatic works, in the original language, without the staging, sets or costumes.
La Bohème opens your soul to emotions too big for words. The music swells with love, soars in ecstasy, crackles with jealousy and cries with heartache…
The composer Giacomo Puccini created the opera La Bohème in 1896, a four-act opera that premiered on February 1, 1896, in Teatro Regio, Turin. The setting of La Bohème takes place in 1830s Paris, France.
The opera is based on a collection of related stories by Henri Murger published in 1851 and follows the standard Italian opera format as a very popular performance across the world. The story shows vignettes of bohemian youths who lived in the Latin Quarter of Paris and focuses on relationships, characters, and lovers.
Artistic Director Nina Scott-Stoddart is a professional mezzo-soprano who has sung across Canada, the United States and in New Zealand. Founder of Toronto-based Opera Anonymous, she oversaw over 20 productions from 1994 to 2002.
Nina and her husband moved to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 2002, and has since overseen 18 full operas and a total of 34 concerts with MCO. In 2005 she and Tara Scott founded the Halifax Summer Opera Workshop which has just completed a very successful tenth season.
