Literary Fundraiser / Charity Community

Our annual fundraising campaign is what we call The Literacy Mile. The 2018 Literacy Mile celebration event will be May 5th - with live music, a silent auction, a barbeque, games and activities, as well as our walk-a-thon. The main purpose is to raise awareness of, and funds for, literacy programming in our community. Staff, students and their families, volunteers, community partners and local businesses all work towards a common goal, promoting literacy and adult education in the Annapolis Valley to all, but especially those who may be vulnerable or in some way disadvantaged. The event is held on just one day, but promotions begin months in advance. We try to get as many people out to the event as possible and offer a number of family-friendly activities for the general public, interspersed with providing key information about the work that we do and those who support us in our efforts.
Activities include a walk-a-thon for which students and allies collect pledges, a recognition ceremony for businesses who contribute to VCLA, a silent auction, a barbeque, games and activities. The Lucille and William Owen Award is presented to two students who have shown great progress with studies. Businesses, churches, service clubs and individuals are approached for either donations of silent auction items or financial contributions, and receive recognition by having their name advertised in chalk on the sidewalk along the walk-a-thon route in downtown Kentville.
