Words and Music:
An evening with Blain Henshaw

Former ATV News personality and Annapolis county native Blain Henshaw returns to his home county for a solo concert of Canadian folk and country music.

Words and Music: An Evening with Blain Henshaw, will feature several of Henshaw’s original songs, as well as those of Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Gene MacLellan and other Canadian songwriters. In addition to self accompaniment on guitar and banjo, Blain will play a few selections on piano accordion.
“I am really looking forward to performing at King’s Theatre,” he said. “ I have chosen the theme Words and Music because I’ve always believed that lyrics get right to the heart of the matter and I think today’s audiences still enjoy songs with a strong message, or songs that tell a story. I’ve tried to write my own songs that way and I’ve chosen material by other writers whose lyrics make a real connection with the audience.”
Blain started performing at age six. At age twelve, he played piano accordion on his first live radio performance on CFBC radio, St. John, New Brunswick in 1958. During his years at Annapolis Royal Regional Academy, he played guitar and banjo and sang lead with the locally popular group “The Tartan Four.” The folk quartet was featured weekly in their own radio shows on CKBW Bridgewater, as well as CKEN Kentville and its sister stations, now Annapolis Valley Radio.
During the 1970’s Blain began writing songs with a country and folk flavour. Two of his songs were recorded by major Canadian country artists. Veteran performer Orval Prophet recorded “My Kind of Woman,” which charted nationally as a single and was the title of Prophet’s album. Another prominent country singer, Joyce Smith of Edmonton, recorded “State of Happiness” which also charted nationally.
Several other performers, including The Post Family, Theresa Cleary, and Johnny Gold recorded Henshaw songs on their albums.

In 1974, Blain recorded two of his songs at RCA studios in Toronto under the direction of producer/publisher/artist Gary Buck. They were released as a single “The Man It’s Made of Me” b/w “Hangin’ On” on the Dominion record label and were charted on country music stations across Canada.
With the release of his record, Blain formed a road band “White Line Fever” and played the club and fair circuit in Atlantic Canada for several years, as well as doing concerts and TV appearances on CBC and ATV‘s “Maritime Country.” .
Blain has had a varied career: country music DJ at CKBW Bridgewater; journalist at CJCH radio and ATV News in Halifax; public relations and communications advisor with the government of Nova Scotia; and professional MC, auctioneer and appraiser. Whether performing professionally or casually, music and song writing have always been an important part of his life.
“I wrote my first songs when I was a kid growing up in Annapolis county, so it will be a real treat for me to sing some of my songs where I actually have roots,” he said.
