THE ANNAPOLIS DISTRICT DRAMA GROUP, Directed by Simon Bonnington, presents
THE LADYKILLERS
Posing as a string quintet of amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang of inept ne’er-do-well villains rent rooms in the lopsided house of an elderly widow, the sweet and eccentric Mrs Wilberforce. The crooks plot to involve her, unwittingly, in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived security-van heist.
The police are left stumped, but Mrs Wilberforce tumbles to the truth of their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs Wilberforce is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music?
Based upon the classic Ealing Studios 1955 movie that starred Alec Guiness, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellers, the stage adaptation of The Ladykillers was written by Graham Linehan in 2011 and premièred at the Liverpool Playhouse (England) later that year, with Peter Capaldi taking on the mantle as the insane but brilliant Marcus.
The play had its North American premiere last year at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Using a innovate set design which integrates two storeys within, as well as roof top, and rail-tracks below, Director Simon Bonnington is delighted to bring this play to the stage of King’s Theatre with the Annapolis District Drama Group – only the second production of the show on this continent!
