CAPE BRETON’S CELTIC ROOTS TRIO HAULER
OPENED BY HAYLEY RYERSON ON CELTIC FIDDLE
HAULER: Seamlessly blending and bending roots, rock, and traditional Cape Breton Celtic music together into a hearty homemade soup that can dynamically have you hanging off every lyric – or knock you flat on your arse – Cape Breton’s contemporary Celtic trio Hauler has been simmering on the stove and have now served themselves up with the release of their debut album.
Fresh off their 2021 ECMA nominee for “Rising Star Recording of the Year”, Familiar faces from saltwater funk trio Slowcoaster Steve MacDougall and Mike LeLievre have teamed up with fiddler Colin Grant, Instrumental Artist of the Year at the 2017 Canadian Folk Music Awards and a versatile musician who bounces between genres like a token fiddler should, the trio weaves traditional Irish and Scottish ballads, indie folk originals, and traditional and contemporary tune instrumentals with a modern acoustic approach that proves Cape Breton music can reassuringly re-invent itself.
Celtic culture plays a huge part of Hauler’s sound. So far it looks like their focus will be solidly in the traditional category.
“We are from Cape Breton, so the love of traditional music is ingrained,” says MacDougall. “We wrote some original songs and arrangements to add a twist of contemporary.”
“The Wind That Shakes the Barley” comes from an 1861 ballad written by Robert Dwyer Royce about the Irish rebellion of 1798, and a young romance that gets dashed in the process.
“I did this for fun and a change of pace. Ironically this is the music I originally started playing as a child,” says MacDougall. “The arrangement for ‘Wind that Shakes the Barley was written in 1998 while I was hired to play in the Celtic band MacKeel.”
MacDougall says he left the song to be brushed off and polished by Le Lievre and Grant, with recording being done by Jamie Foulds at his Soundpark Studios, but it was Grant who has taken the lead on Hauler.
“He is the brains behind the operation . I wanted to take a back seat on this project. I really bow to him, I just wanted to sing and occasionally play the guitar and the Irish drum.”
HAYLER RYERSON is an alluring performer, inspired fiddler, and spirited Canadian tunecrafter. Her style is rooted in Scottish and Cape Breton playing traditions, her original tunes extending naturally from these styles. Hayley finds inspiration in rich feelings, often inspired from natural landscapes or her love of fiddle music itself, oftentimes both.
Both Sides of The Water is Hayley’s first full length Celtic album and is a love letter to her past 20 years of fiddling. Hayley began to play at 8 years old, and the culture and craft have been welcome constants throughout her life. Her album was crowdfunded in Autumn of 2019, thanks to Indiegogo backers and indie art enthusiasts that supported the project. Maggie MacDonald is featured alongside Hayley Ryerson and the two recorded the album in Banff, AB in early 2020.
