Koqm is a journey through time and land to experience the voices of fictional L’nu (Mi’kmaw) women. Throughout the course of the show we hear and meet the women who might have spoken and walked through one area of forest over centuries. Guided by the strength of an ancient tree (“koqm”), the women’s voices share with us their personal stories of grief, humour and resiliency through a unique theatrical performance that includes story-telling, poetry, dance and song.
Written and performed by: shalan joudry
Director: Ken Schwartz
Mask Dramaturgy: Ann-Marie Kerr
Production: Two Planks and a Passion Theatre, Nestuita’si Storytelling, and El’tuek Qokom
Movement consultants: Susanne Chui & Sarah Prosper
Lighting Design: MacKenzie Cornfield
Graphics: design by MacKenzie Cornfield, drawing by Milidow Joudry-Martel (after Mi’kmaw pertroglyphs)
Shalan is an oral storyteller, poet, actor, playwright, podcast producer, as well as a cultural interpreter from L’sitkuk (Bear River) Mi’kmaq Community. Shalan’s unique voice and use of Mi’kmaq/L’nu and English words brings language and art together.
In 2019, King’s Theatre presented the stage premier of shalan’s two-person play Elaputiek to a sold-out house. We are thrilled to welcome her back to our stage with this new production.
*Per Provincial regulations, proof of vaccination or exception is required and masks are mandatory. Please arrive 45 minutes before the show so we can get you seated on time.
