Event in Room: Studio (upstairs)
LEVEL: Beginner
DESCRIPTION:
In this workshop you will make prints on watermedia paper with plant material.
The process is known by a few names besides eco printmaking, including boiled books or botanical printing.
You will place flowers and leaves on paper sprayed with an alum and water mixture. These sheets are then folded, stacked and tied between wooden panels, brought to a boil and simmered. Tannins in the plant react with natural colorants in the water (such as logwood, onion peels or rust) to produce your print.
MATERIALS PROVIDED FOR YOU:
Pots, boards, bricks, logwood colorant, mordants, some plants, pencils, newspaper, printmaking paper
MATERIALS TO BRING:
Leaves and flowers from home, paper for taking notes.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Kathleen Bunin earned a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. She was an eco printmaking Artist in Residence for the City of Fredericton, N.B. Botanical Gardens in 2019. Last October, Bunin offered an eco printmaking workshop for NS Teachers Union Art Teachers at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design in Sydney.
