King’s Theatre has a long and storied history behind it – upwards of 150 years. Over the course of two talks, the history of King’s Theatre and performance in Annapolis Royal will be told, from the heydays of travelling theatrical troupes in the late 1800s and the advent of moving pictures and films in the early 1900s to the restoration of King’s Theatre in the early 1980s and beyond. We will also look at some of the people who are an important part of the history of King’s Theatre and performance in our area but are largely unknown to us, such as Mr. James F. Cripps, Miss Edna F. Anderson, Mr. Bernstein & Mr. Lieberman, and the women who were responsible for the 1956 re-enactment of Neptune’s Theatre. The talks will also highlight some of great performances that have taken place in our town in the past 150 years, for example, did you know that a prince once performed on King’s Theatre’s stage? Come to the talks and find out all about it!

Philip DeNuke is a 9th generation resident of Granville Beach where his grandmother’s family have lived since the mid-1700s. His interest in history really took off when he began volunteering with the Annapolis Heritage Society in 2012. Philip also worked for the AHS in the summers and could be found helping people with genealogy and research as well as giving tours in the O’Dell House Museum, Sinclair Inn Museum, and North Hills Museum. Since working at King’s Theatre, Philip has gained a new appreciation for our area’s long history of performance and has added theatre history in his list of research interests. Philip is working towards his Bachelor of History at Acadia and plans on a career in museums and archives.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by a guardian when attending a King’s Theatre event.
