by Catherine Martin

This documentary is on Mi’kmaw women basket makers and their contribution to the traditional art form and economy, by award-winning Mi’kmaq Filmmaker Cathy Martin. Basket Maker is a journey from past to present with a compilation of footage from Martin’s personal film images as well as archival footage of Mi’kmaw women basket makers. “It is like having a good visit with those women basket makers who influenced me early in my life,” says Martin. The film honours them for the contribution made to our families and nation as entrepreneurs and keepers of ancient knowledge.

Catherine Martin is an independent producer and the first Mi’kmaq filmmaker from the Atlantic Region. A member of the Millbrook First Nation in Truro, Catherine is an independent film producer, director, writer, facilitator, communications consultant, community activist, teacher, drummer, and the first woman Mi’kmaw filmmaker from the Atlantic region. Catherine’s many award-winning documentaries tell the stories of her nation and include the animation film Little Boy Who Lived with Muini’skw (2004), the NFB film The Spirit of Annie Mae (2002), and Spirit Wind (2000).
