Ink, Letters and Lines:
A calligraphic approach for painters
with Lorna Mulligan
A workshop for artists who wish to loosen up with their brushwork, to make their own meaningful marks and enliven their paintings.
Although technically not a calligraphy course, this hands-on workshop draws inspiration from traditional letterforms, and on to more contemporary abstract explorations.
We’ll start with basic calligraphic techniques, including simple pencil-drawn letters and painted ink arabesques. We then go on to apply this in a still-life or abstract painting on the second day, where the focus is on the expressive quality of the painted line.
Participants will learn some of the techniques of gestural movement, with emphasis on brush handling and manipulation, to invigorate their brush strokes for a more painterly approach.
LEVEL:
- Some painting experience required
- Age: 18+
MATERIALS PROVIDED:
- Paintbrush and other tools, black ink, paper
MATERIALS TO BRING:
- Pencil (2B or softer), masking tape, paper
- Medium weight paper for studies, Bristol, Mixed-Media, Cold-Pressed, etc. (no smaller than 9x12, bigger is better)
- Second Saturday: Bring your paints, brushes, and a support(s) for studies and to do a final painting.
