British surrealist Leonora Carrington was a key part of the surrealist movement during its heyday in Paris and yet, until recently, remained a virtual unknown in the country of her birth. After rejecting her upper-class upbringing in northern England, Carrington embarked upon a relationship with Surrealist artist Max Ernst, and became central in the Surrealist circles of France and New York. After hanging out with celebrated names such as Andre Breton and Pablo Picasso, the artist then moved to Mexico where she spent the rest of her life painting, as well as making sculpture, tapestry, writing poetry and designing for theatre and film.
Leonora Carrington: The Lost Surrealist won both the Grierson Best Arts Film Award and an RTS.
Teresa Griffiths is an award winning director known for making visually inventive, beautifully crafted films. I have been working in film and television for more than twenty five years and have directed films that have been shown around the world.
Most recently Griffiths made a series of Arts biographies all of which have either been nominated for, or have won awards. Lee Miller: Life on the Frontline won the Bafta Best Director [factual] and Bafta Best Editing 2021. Leonora Carrington: The Lost Surrealist won both the Grierson Best Arts Film Award and an RTS. Other recent subjects have been Egon Schiele and Sylvia Plath. She is particularly interested in telling women’s stories.
