Peter Mowat The Deep Roots Music Festival: For the Love of Music.
Abstract: Have you ever wondered what it takes to put on one of Nova Scotia’s premier events, what happens when a hurricane changes the plans, or how to handle a headline performer when he refuses to go on stage! The Deep Roots Music Cooperative came to life in November 2003 and in 2004 Wolfville hosted the first Deep Roots Music Festival. In the next hour you will learn the history of Deep Roots including the cooperative structure, the volunteer community, the financial support, the highs and lows, and the impact of the Cooperative and festival over the past 23 years.
Biography: Originally from Wolfville, and a proud 1978 graduate of Saint Mary’s University with a B.A. and B.Ed. Peter has experience in a plethora of careers that include working on oil rigs, running Calgary’s water treatment plants, being one of the first drivers of the Kings Transit bus system (Sureline), running the East Coast component of a national literacy project, and revising Nova Scotia’s Tudor Training Program manual. In 2003 he began teaching for the Nova Scotia Community College, eventually gravitating to Student Services and retiring in 2018. In 2002 Peter was a participant in the early townhall planning sessions for Deep Roots, volunteering during the festival for several years before joining the Deep Roots Board of Directors in 2006 and subsequently serving as Board Chair for 14 years.
