Wendy Robicheau Not Just Lies: How I weave Historical Facts with Fiction to Create Stories of Faction
Abstract: Wendy’s books challenge local lore by proposing alternative backstories for various events. The first novella, Hidden in Plane Sight: The Burning of College Hall (2024), takes the reader to the days surrounding a spectacular fire in 1920 and investigates arson. The second book, Founded in Tragedy: The Calamity that Shaped a College (2025), immerses the reader in an emotional world of the early College of 1852 and examines an accident that almost sunk the College. Both titles are published by Clairmont Publishing Services, based in New Minas. Wendy’s method of bringing Acadia University’s past to life uses a formula for ‘faction’ that she shares with us. Find out how she does it and learn that her novellas are not just lies.

Biography: Wendy G. Robicheau grew up in Yarmouth, where her fascination with local history began in the museum. During her third year of studying history at Saint Mary’s University, Wendy found her calling in the archives. Forty-years later, she still works and volunteers in archives and heritage. As an Archivist at Acadia University, her archival work provides hands-on classroom instruction and centers on public engagement. Wendy roots her research in the Annapolis Valley and especially the University, where a rich trove of stories beg to be told. Equally comfortable presenting from the lectern or writing at the keyboard, she brings Acadia’s past to life by allowing long-gone voices to be heard. Wendy chronicles about the men and women caught up in the excitement and horror of World War One, sometimes taking students to the cemeteries and battlefields of Europe. She also turns her talents into historical fiction novellas that weave facts into a narrative. Wendy plans to continue honouring Acadia’s soldiers and writing historical novellas for the foreseeable future.
